A good teaching moment here for all Chevelle Enthusiasts. With this 1965 Chevelle 300. For the really observant Chevelle fans. You'll notice the VIN number and the model number on the cowl tag don't match. VIN number is 131695K1XXXXX. And the cowl tag shows model number 13269. Yet, both tags are the factory installed tags from assembly. This is because this Chevelle was built in Kansas City. And Kansas City got their Chevelle bodies from a Fisher Body plant and didn't build the bodies onsite. Fisher Body used a weird coding scheme on the cowl tag from 1964 - 69. Where they only used the V8 model numbers for all four door sedans, two door sedans, coupes, convertibles, station wagons and two door sedan pickups. To account for every body that Fisher Body plants built. Being a 6 cyl or V8 did change the fact that was a four door sedan, two door sedan, coupe, etc. Its only once that Chevelle body got to the assembly plant and was actually built into a fully functional Chevelle and the VIN tag was attached. Indicating that it was a factory 6 cyl or V8 car. The only American Chevelle plant from the start of production in 1964 till they ceased to built Chevelles. Where the model number on the cowl tag and in the VIN tag will match is Fremont, California. As Fremont was an Auto Plex - meaning it had a stamping and assembly plant next to each other and was not just an assembly plant. So, Fremont stamped out all the components to build the Chevelle bodies onsite. Welded all the sub assembles together and built the bodies there. Then sent those bodies down the assembly line to be assembled into a completed Chevelles. So that's why only Fremont cowl tags will show either a 6 cyl model number for a factory 6 cyl car. Or a V8 model number on the cowl tag for a factory V8 car. All the other American plants (from 1964 - 69) received Chevelle bodies from Fisher Body. Hence why you'll never see any other American built Chevelle that was a factory 6 cyl car with a 6 cyl model number on the cowl tag. But you'll find a V8 model number on the cowl tag like this 1965 Chevelle 300 four door sedan shows. Making people believe the tags have been switched when they haven't. I wonder how many of the folks reading this post. Have a Chevelle that is a factory 6 cyl car that now has a V8 engine in it -that wasn't installed at the factory. And don't know their VIN number is a 6 cyl car one. I bet quite a few Chevelle fans may have a surprise waiting for them. On their driver's side door jamb for Chevelles built from 1964 - 67. 1968/69 owners can see their VIN numbers through the windshield. Like I said at the start. This 1965 Chevelle 300 sedan is a good example of a teaching moment about factory tags and identification of Chevelles. Something a lot of Chevelle Enthusiasts don't know. But now you do.
