What is the difference between Chevelle, Malibu, 300, and SS?
Chevelle is the line of cars created by Semon "Bunkie" Knudsen. In the early 1960s, GM’s competitors were making money with intermediate cars—larger than compacts like the Chevy II but smaller (and cheaper) than full-size Impalas. Ford launched the Fairlane in 1962, filling that “mid-size” slot. Chevrolet at the time had the compact Chevy II/Nova and full-size cars, but nothing in between. Knudsen recognized Chevrolet was losing buyers in that middle segment. He pushed his team to develop a new “A-body” mid-size platform, which became the Chevelle for the 1964 model year. The Chevelle lineup was designed to be broad, ranging from practical sedans and wagons up to stylish coupes and eventually muscle variants (like the Malibu SS 396). The Chevelle name and Malibu sub-series gave Chevrolet an anchor in the intermediate market that lasted through the 1970s.
Knudsen’s marketing and product vision emphasized variety (family cars, sporty coupes, performance trims). Within a few years, the Chevelle became one of Chevrolet’s most important lines, especially with the SS performance models in the muscle car era.
He was a General Motors executive, the son of former GM president William Knudsen. He made his name at Pontiac in the late 1950s, where he helped turn the brand from a conservative “grandpa car” division into a youth-oriented performance image (with models like the Bonneville and later the GTO). In 1961, GM moved him to Chevrolet Division as general manager.
(From the site Admin) Hello 65 Chevelle Owners!
I started this site just for us, owners of 1965 Chevelles. Why? I've been getting a lot of great advice from owners who have finished their projects so I wanted to expand the community. Also, there are a lot of sites dedicated to all Chevelles, which is great, but I found them to be cluttered with stuff I didn't need (after all, only '64 has a lot of common parts with our car). So here it is, a place just for us! This is my hobby so I'm not trying to make any money off of this site or any parts/services offered here. I simply want to expand our community!
Websites can be costly and difficult to maintain so I made this using Google Docs. Why?
Hosting is free forever.
I can easily assign pages to owners. They can put anything they want on their page (ex. pictures, parts wanted, parts for sale, etc.) The pages are Google Docs so they're easy to edit (like using Microsoft Word on your browser).
We can easily create and maintain owners registries, like the one we have for Evening Orchid Chevelles. Do you want to make one for Cypress Green Chevelles? Contact us!
Why not let Google worry about the security!
A personal note. Why do I love 1965 Chevelles so much? I think it's because growing up, my dad raced a '65 Chevelle hardtop known as "Cannabis Kid" (Yea, he was a little ahead of his time). Anyway, he worked and raced it every weekend and as I grew older, I helped him. He then gave it to me for my first car (It had a blown 396 so I had to build another engine). I guess because I don't have any siblings, that car was like a brother to me! Plus, I love the basic design, size, and pretty much everything else about the car.
